Colonial Wars DB
The Colonial Wars database covers the period between 1950 and 1964. This epoch saw the 1950-53 Korean War, Suez Crisis (1956) and the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962). Numerous conflicts in Africa and South America were flaring up and the Soviets and Americans were starting to flex their muscles and having influence in developing countries worldwide while traditional European power was in decline losing overseas colonies in Africa and the Far East. This is an era where missiles were just starting to make their appearance in the form of SAMs and AAMs; the Soviets were developing large long range air, surface and sub launched missiles; the United States was starting to build their fleet of Super Carriers and the Royal Navy was engaged world wide. In all, an interesting period of actual and possible conflicts throughout the world after the end of World War Two.

Operational Sea Training
Flag Officer Sea Training (FOST)
“The most important single factor in a Naval Service is the quality of its personnel and their training.” (Fundamentals of British Maritime Doctrine)
FOST has been training Royal Navy ships for nearly 50 years. During the Second World War much of the Operational Sea Training (OST) of the Royal Navy was conducted in Scotland around Tobermory. In 1946 the economics of the post-war period began to bite and so it became necessary to restrict the larger capital ships to home water exercises and harbour training. Linked to the Fleet returning to peace-time manning, this precipitated the formation of the Portland Training Squadron, whose role was to prepare ships for their operational tasks before they joined their squadrons.
OST was established at Portland in late 1958 as a modification of the existing Portland Training Squadron’s role. Many famous names passed through Portland that first year, HMS Belfast and HMS Daring to name but two. The last Royal Navy ship to undergo OST at Portland, before the move to Plymouth in the summer of 1995, was the Type 22 frigate HMS London.

She was brought to Bombay on November 3 1961 and later became part of the Indian Fleet as a fully operational carrier.
Her initial air wing consisted of British Hawker Seahawk fighter-bombers and French Alize anti-submarine aircraft.
Pakistan was outraged at the purchase of the Vikrant, and protested to the United Nations stating that this would alter the balance of power in the Indian Ocean Region into Indias favour. This protest fell on deaf ears so Pakistan decided to take action herself to ensure Vikrant would never reach Bombay.

The Nigerian Civil War has become a huge human tragedy as Federal forces enforce an almost air tight blockade against the break away state of Biafra. Every night on Western TV people are witnesses to the starvation and misery of the population but little is done about it in the UN or in any national capitol. Unlike Vietnam, Angola, Rhodesia or some of the other conflicts raging in this era, the war in Nigeria is not one of proxies. America is busy in Southeast Asia and has no interests in the former British colony. British oil companies have staked their claims with the Federal Nigerian government and London gives aid and support to them as well. The Soviets also assist the Lagos regime and have supplied large quantities of military equipment and technical advisers. Mercenaries from Europe and the Soviet Block have flocked to Nigeria to sell their skills to both sides, but particularly to the Federal government who can pay with hard currency although few actually see action. Embattled Biafra fights essentially alone, recognized only by a handful of minor African states and the Republic of Haiti. The are some Western relief agencies trying to maintain a minimal airlift into Biafra in a futile attempt to mitigate the suffering. These groups are chartering old piston engined airliners that fly the dangerous route from the island of Fernando Po to isolated and primitive airfields in Biafran held territory. Although gun runners are operating in the same airspace forcing the Federal Air Force to intercept and attempt to shoot down all planes over or near Biafran held territory, the relief flights can carry only minute quantities of food and medical supplies. However, since Biafra has virtually nothing, every bag of powdered milk, rice or medicine helps. In May 1969, a Federal air strike destroyed several of these planes on the ground and earlier this month a DC-6B over-loaded with foodstuffs was intercepted and shot down by a Nigerian MiG, killing all aboard.
Although France has not formally recognized the Republic of Biafra, the Navy has had a frigate stationed in the Bight of Biafra for some time to look after French interests and hunt pirates. After the May attack on the relief flight, Paris has sent the Foch carrier battle group with new orders.

Throughout the Cold War the protagonist’s navies and air forces played a dangerous game of ‘chicken’ at sea and in the skies above it. That incidents took place was widely known but the particulars were kept as closely guarded secrets. Eventually both sides developed diplomatic and operational protocols to handle how their respective forces responded to provocations and operations in close proximity to each other. Still accidents happened and sadly, lives were lost. In this scenario, both sides are in the uneasy Cold War peace of Mutual Assured Destruction while the Soviet Navy is still smarting over its humiliation during the Cuban Missile Crisis less than one-year ago. Now a brand new missile submarine has suffered a major engineering casualty and is limping home as NATO forces gather to watch the rescue operation. This is a potentially dangerous situation that just might spiral out of control if somebody overreacts.

The loyalist forces backed by the UK fought back the incursions into Southern Yemen, but at no time did UK and Egyptian forces go head to head apart from the Odd angry shot at each other nothing happened. With the Venezuela on the verge of another civil war in 1960 , the new President demanded the return of the Dutch Antilles and cut all trade routes with it, hoping this would bring the country together. Holland having lost most of her Colonies after WW2 was not going to agree to this, and with Venezuela banging the drums of war, the Antilles Military forces in the area were strengthened with Sabre and Thunderstreak jets to provide some form of air Support if the situation got hot.
Onroute from a recent Exercise was the Carrier Karel Doorman and Escorts, due to the threat to British interests in the area HMS Bulwark was attached to the Doorman group with Dutch and Royal Marines embarked. The UK West Indies Squadron had also been detached from Bermuda with the South Atlantic Guard ship HMS Crossbow which had been on a port visit to Belize sortied too.

The Air Strikes were considered a success on the Indonesian Airbases, destroying many of the A.U.R.I aircraft in the air and on the ground. Most of the Badger aircraft have been destroyed but at least 6 still remain operational.
The down side of the attacks were the numerous losses to the Vulcan and Canberra’s which were badly mauled by the Mig-21’s. HMS Eagle dispite her defenses was hit by single AS-1 missile and the resulting damage and fires destroyed her catapults and numerous aircraft in the hanger and flightdeck, at present ship is limping back to Perth for repairs.
HMAS Melbourne faired better only receiving minor damage from rocket fire and is now in Singapore awaiting spare aircraft to bring her depleted airgroup up to full strength.

All did not go well for Israel in the 6 Day War with her Neighbours and she suffered a crushing defeat and the hands of the Arabs. Egypt has now retaken her lost lands and has closed the Suez Canal to all traffic. At a press conference in Cairo Egypt threatened to use deadly force on any country trying to re-open the canal. The US has decided not to pursue this matter as with growing hate against the Vietnam War at home ,all US forces have been pulled out of area.
The United Kingdom and France have decided to retake the Suez Canal by military means and have deployed a combined force of 3 Attack Carriers and 2 Amphib Groups with air and submarine support to the Region.
The UK and France did the same operation 10 years earlier…but this time Egypt is now equipt with Soviet ships, submarines, aircraft and long range air launched anti-ship weapons.
The time has come once again for Egypt to flex her muscles!.

On 26 October 1966, USS Oriskany (CVA-34) with CVAW 16 embarked was conducting intensive air operations against targets in North Vietnam. At about 0730 local time the carrier was racked by a major fire and series of explosions. 44 crewmen died and the official explanation was that the cause of the blaze was an explosion in a forward flare storage locker on the hanger deck.
What if the disaster had some other cause? This scenario lasts just over three days and terminates about the time the real fire occurs.
You are the Commander, Oriskany Carrier Battlegroup with Carrier Air Group (CVAW) 16 embarked. Your force is the southern most element of Task Force 77 (and designated TG 77.3) engaged in the continuing OPERATION ROLLING THUNDER against targets in North Vietnam.
Currently your escorts are concentrated on Oriskany except for USS DeHaven (DD 727) as outlying radar picket. You may not move NORTH of the northern boundry of your AOR to prevent interference with the Constellation (CVA 64) and Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA 42) battlegroups.
Intelligence reports that MiG 17 Fresco’s have been operating over North Vietnam recently as far SOUTH as the DMZ (AOR1). The possibilty exists that these may be flown by Soviet pilots. AAA remains the greatest threat to airstrikes and NVA gunners are improving. The naval surface threat is considered minimal and no significant torpedo boat activity has been observed in months. Elements of the PRC and USSR merchant fleets and the occasional naval auxiliary have been observed shadowing TF-77 units however there has been no interference in our operations. On 11 October 66 a JMSDF P2J observed a Soviet submarine exiting through Tsushima Straights and heading south. This is unusual and reported only because Red Fleet boats seldom use Tsushima to transit to the Pacific. Its intention is unknown but it is assessed as having probably returned to Vladavostok undetected.
