Harpoon 2 Screenshot #3
Shown here is the formation editors for Carrier Battle Group (CVBG) America and Orland Air Base in central Norway. The formation editor is perhaps the most powerful feature in Harpoon II and allows you to handle the units in a group. You can set up several different types of patrol stations for ships (station hold, sprint-drift, random) and aircraft (AEW, CAP, ASW (either dipping sonar or sonobuoy) etc). You can also set the EMCON (emission control) state for each of the units – active, passive or intermediate. All patrol stations are part of a Threat Type; AAW, ASuW and ASW. The Threat Type’s direction can be changed to respond to new threats, or even track a certain point so that for example your fighters will always patrol between your ships and the enemy airbase even as your group moves.
The simulator has a complicated mission editor. Here you can make missions for any of your units. Mission types includes Ferry/Transit, Strike (Air Intercept, Ship Strike, Ground Attack, Anti-Submarine Strike), Patrol (AAW, ASuW, ASW), Support (used for AEW and Jamming support etc) and different types of Recon. Strike missions can be fixed (where you select one or more enemy units to be destroyed) or flexible (where the assigned units will attack the first legal target detected, for example an aircraft or a ship). You can also set the mission’s EMCON state and a special 1:3 flag so that only one-third of the assigned aircraft will be airborne at any time. The latter is especially useful for patrol missions.
